Skunks and ice fishing

As February draws to a close, we were just saying how many dead skunks there are on the road. You know, your driving along and …. Sniff sniff…. SKUNK around! The number of road kill skunks had increased this month. There will be an abundance of squirrels sometime during the year. I guess it’s a cycle.
February has been a strange month. This is our first winter up here and we anticipated SNOW and COLD. We really haven’t gotten much of either. We aren’t complaining! We have been able to get out to breakfast most mornings and what snow has fallen has melted rather quickly. As I look out the window the woods are snowless and brown from leaves. People still go out on the lake to ice fish - we see them every morning. I think they are crazy. The ice isn’t very thick, yet they are out there. There was a group of ice fisherman (or women, who could tell?) close to shore in a cove. Well, that makes sense in that the Lake is not very deep and therefore if the ice gave away, they could walk out. There were two people out a ways in the middle. One had a tent and is out there many mornings!! I know ice fishing is a big thing - definitely not a sport we are interested in.
Well, off to pick up the mail and drop off the trash.

Maybe they were on their way home from breakfast?

There were quite a few....

They didn't stay in the circle - good! They were eating the shrubs!

The deer cam to visit this morning. I went out on the porch to take the pictures. They are on the other side of our driveway going to the back woods.

Sunday Pictures

If you look closely, you can see the stream through the woods. This is what I see from the loft. Posted by Picasa

More of the stream

This is the same stream as it goes under the road and on to the Lake. I'm standing on the road to take this. Posted by Picasa

Sunday "problems"

Well, I had every intention of showing a picture of the snow we are having. We woke up to snow... and I'd say we have about three inches - much less than the "lucky" people in Philly area! After having breakfast we went out to clean the driveway. As B used the snow blower I swept off the steps and then the car, which he had parked back off the driveway. Then I took a walk and took pictures. Just went to upload them and found out I left the memory card in the computer!! So, NO pictures. Will go out later, now that I put the card in.

We have not seen as many deer as we did back in December. On Thursday there was a deer we could see out our back windows who looked injured. He/She was favoring the back leg and was just standing under the trees. Every time we checked it was still there - then it was down sitting (I know deer don't sit but it wasn't laying down on it's side) It was there all day. Good news is that yesterday it was gone... so maybe it just needed a rest. Some of the people up here feed the deer. We don't - they eat our acorns and forage in the woods.... I don't want them close to the house eating plants which they do without any encouragement.

I'm in the loft now and the view out the window is really pretty. The trees are dusted with snow. Most are bare with branches trimmed in white. There are several pine trees that are now heavy with snow. The snow is not falling straight so I guess there is wind. Big, fat flakes that almost look like snow globe snow. From up here I can just see the stream that is a dark ribbon... due to the warm weather it isn't frozen. Will post pictures later....
