Saturday evening - 6:11 PM - Finals for the Super Bowl!! YEA!!.... And B just knocked over the clock that records the outside temps that is now working... and it's 10 outside.. and, from the looks of what we see on TV, we are not that much warmer than Green Bay!!!!
We are in the lower level family room... drinks in hand waiting for dinner to cook.... long distance.... an easy oven thing with chicken and stuffing, sour cream, frozen mixed veggies and bake and serve. ANYWAY, the guys that we like to listen to look ready to deal with the cold. I like Howie but he needs to shave!!!
The local paper (Scranton) had an interesting lead in... First page of Sports section Headline "Playoff freeze" with a sub heading of "plummeting temperatures mean frozen balls and sleeveless jerseys". Only in PA... This headline caused me to remember an episode I had back in the days when I was a new Vice-Principal. The kids were playing this game where they threw the ball up against the wall and then someone else hit it...anyway, I went over the intercom to all the classrooms before the lunch time and said something to the effect of "Students should be careful about throwing their balls up against the wall". As I turned the intercom off, I looked at my secretary and said "I can't believe I said that!" I can't tell you how many responses I got about that. My teachers really kidded me ... and so the headlines 20 years later brought back those memories.
Back to the game on TV. Terry Bradshaw looks warm and Jim Johnson with his head band does too. The really cool guy is Howie Long with his goofy hat and Hollywood guy wannabe beard. These guys are cool and we really enjoy listening to them, though I really don't understand what they say as I'm not a football follower. They just showed a glass of water that was frozen.... the wind chill is minus 23... we are warm!!!
So we are relaxing... after a day of working on organizing. I have new bookshelves for my Amazon sales and they really look good. B put them together THANK YOU and now they are all in order. I'm updating my data base and getting stuff in order... gotta keep busy!!! Anyway, I also cleaned some and did some laundry and we did go out for breakfast. A really nice day. And dinner is just about ready so I have to go up to check on it.
And soon... SUPER BOWL!!!!

The Deer are Back
It is getting colder and we have snow on the ground again. We were supposed to be "warm" with temperatures in the mid 30's but I don't think it ever got above freezing. There was some sun early on but by noon the sky had turned grey - a generally gloomy day. We headed toward Scranton for a bit of shopping. Lunch at Burger King - we haven't eaten at a BK since we moved up here. Then home and back to some things I had been doing before we left.
I was in the bedroom putting laundry away and looked out the sliding door toward the septic mound and woods and... deer - several in fact. We have seen them occasionally and the chewed plants and hoof marks acknowledge their visits but I had not really seen them yet this year. They were coming through the side woods from up the road and as they passed through, were nibbling their way. We have lots of acorns on the ground back on the mound and they must of remembered their pig outs from last year (tho we had more acorns fall last year than this year). This little guy (0r gal) was nibbling on the tree branch. The rest of the gang stuck to the easy stuff on the ground.
While some of them are loners, they generally stick together with at least one friend. They are coming out of the woods onto the mound.

And joined by another friend they are foraging for the acorns.... and finding them from the length of time they were heads down.
This is at the edge of the driveway where it curves around. If you have been here, you know where I mean. They headed down the steep hill behind the tree you see to the right and there is a tall pine tree at the bottom of the hill that they shelter under.

Snow???? NO
We were lucky - the snow didn't amount to much. But, as we anticipated snow I actually planned to make breakfast! Yea, a plan.... a recipe I found in my stash of recipes and other clippings I've kept over the years and am now weeding out. Anyway, this was like a strata but had apples and pecans rather than meat and cheese. I followed the directions, and baked it this morning. I didn't realize it required baking for about 40 minutes and then needed to sit another 15 so we ended up with oatmeal first then the apple thing after. And it was good. I'm not going to list the recipe as I want to do it again with some changes... I felt it needed more pecans and maybe some spices.
It snowed off and on all day but with the temps around 33 it didn't stick. It's now 32 and still snowing so maybe we will end up with snow tomorrow. However, we had better go out to breakfast as I've nothing planned :)
Cold weather is in the offing for later this week into the weekend. Well, we knew winter wasn't over.
And, to top things off, I sold 3 books and we mailed them today... yea for the Library!!!!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Here it is, January 2, 2008. Hard to believe another year has passed.
It's cold. We had two snow storms that dumped 5 inches or so each on us New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. So B snow blowed and we were fine. It's kinda scary... is this global warming???? If so, why so cold??? And now they tell us that it will warm up later on into the 50's. Well, right now its **&&%%$ cold... 7 degrees and it's windy so heaven knows what the wind chill is. This is why so may go south... "snow birds" even if they "reside" here they take off for 2 or 3 months to South Carolina or Florida. Not us.... but it is Damn cold!!!!
Spent today putting away the Christmas decorations. Took them down over the past two days and today they went into storage under the steps on the lower level. It's a very "exacting' task... got to fit things together... no spaces left over... get as much as you can in the little space. I had "weeded" things out giving stuff to the Hospital Store in early December. Now I have some more things to donate next year. Then there were the gifts we got at Target and such for next year's Christmas Eve party. So now we are back to "normal" what ever that is. The decorations are gone and with the tree down I will be able to see the TV again in the living room.
And looking back, it was a good year. We had no major sicknesses and we managed to get along and not yell at each other too much. We got stuff done around the house and donated time and energy to the local library. We kept in contact with friends and nurtured new friends and made more new friends. All and all, it was a good year. And we hope it was for you, too.
