Spring has Arrived!!

Well, the flowers are up and the weather is warm. Spring is here!!! YEA!!!
We have been in the 50's during the day despite some rain. No freezing temps at night. My seeds are doing really well.

The Giant Bean has been transplanted into it's own pot. I did that several days ago. We then hit Home Depot earlier this week to get some planters for the deck and potting soil. The idea is to plant all this stuff on the deck since the deer are so eager to eat anything I don't want to spend the summer fighting them! So, we checked out both Home Depot and Wal Mart as they are right next to each other. Potting soil was a better price at Wal Mart. But, after getting some we took a gander at Home Depot. BOY, AM I GLAD WE DID. They were cleaning out some stock and i found flower boxes for $2.50 down from over $8. Well, I grabbed 10 and was talking to this guy who worked in the department and he said, Oh, I have some smaller ones - they were $1.00 each so I got 8 (that's all they had) and we loaded the car (which was full of stuff from Wal Mart) and went home. And, the more I thought about it, the more I realized that I had LEFT SOME BEHIND... yes, they had more of the larger size. So...... back to Home Depot and YES, they were there... so I loaded them in the cart - all 8 of them. And, spied some square pots with the same pattern in the corner and checked their price... they were $1. so I got them too.
Well, I'm swimming in pots..... and we got more soil too. But, you can't crowed these plants and one of the smaller was filled with 6 of my lettuce plants. So, I don't think I'll have any trouble filling them. I was outside working this afternoon and plan to continue tomorrow. I'll take some pictures and post them later. This is fun and we will eat well this summer!!!

And to top it off, we had gotten some whirly gigs this winter and here is the fish - so cute. And maybe he will scare off the deer.

What does April SNOW Bring???

This little guy is supposed to welcome us to spring. Instead, he is snow covered! Booooo Hisss
The storm that has hit most of the States blew in to NE PA Friday evening. We had rain off and on and very heavy at times all day Saturday and last night. We were expecting snow and were happy when we looked out this morning to see just rain. We also were visited again by the turkeys. I took pictures but they didn't turn out. Will try again tomorrow as it seems we are on their route. We went to breakfast and as we went, the rain was turning to snow. Most of the schools in our area are closed or delayed. Our school is closed. As we drove home the snow was sticking. It's now 10:30 and I just took these pictures. As you can see, it's doing more than just sticking.

This is the view out back. As you can see, we are snow covered. We have about 2 inches at this point.

On a more cheerful note, I thought I'd show you all "super bean". I decided to try planting seeds this year and planted beans and lettuce and some other things last week. I added a third and fourth tray Friday. In the above picture you can see the lettuce in the foreground and one bean making its way into the world. I planted two rows of beans - the top two - and this one bean was the first to show up.

And here it is this morning..... SUPER BEAN!!! This little sucker just keeps growing and has the first set of real leaves while the others just move on like normal beans. The roots are coming out of the pot and into the pots next to it so I'm going to have to transplant this thing soon. So, I guess there is hope that spring will come (sometime) and that we will eat string beans this summer.
I'll keep you posted!!!

Spring Time at the Lake

A few days ago, when we had snow, I took this picture of spring flowers attempting to bloom. It has been so cold that I was surprised to see them at all. I'm happy to report that they are doing fine. It is, however STILL COLD

On Monday we were visited by wild turkeys! This was taken from our bedroom deck as they walked into the woods. They came up over the septic mound and by the time I got the camera they were going into the woods. However, you can see enough to know they were big. And there was quite a lot of them.... Could I be mixed up and this is Thanksgiving??? Well, it IS cold enough :)

Regardless of the weather outside, we are growing seeds inside. I have two trays going and we went to Home Depot today for more seeds and more growing trays. Hope springs eternal and we anticipate them to grow. I'm planting both veggies and flowers. More pictures as they grow (or not, as the case may be)

About Me

After working for 40 years in education, I retired and with my husband moved to the "wilds" of PA. This blog is thoughts and pictures of what we are doing.
