Out Like a Lion!

The saying is...... if March comes in like a lamb it goes out like a lion. Today, the last day in March, the weather is AGAIN acting like a LION. Earlier this week we had howling winds. The stand of trees in the back swayed and again dropped branches. The guys we have contracted with to deal with the trees are behind schedule due to rainy weather. And the trees again dropped numerous branches - some small, some rather large. Yesterday (Wednesday) B and I went outside in the afternoon and I raked and picked up the branches as B started putting down lime in the back (we had done the front last week). Poor lawn - it is getting lots of needed care this Spring.

Here is a stick that came down with such force it stuck in the ground. Last week we had a larger branch spear itself into the ground.

Honey enjoys checking out the lawn - you never know what kind of smells are around. The pachysandra is one of her favorite "stops" when she goes out. We have two rabbits that visit our yard regularly. Honey is NOT welcoming. They poop on the lawn and I'm thinking they will be eating flowers come summer so I'm hoping she will cause them to lose interest. Unfortunately, she wants to chase them and since I'm at the other end of her leash, I sometimes go along for the ride! I've learned to drop the leash and just yell her name. She does come right back, often rather startled that I'm no longer attached! We are thinking about putting in one of those electric fences to give her more freedom.

Think Spring!

Spring Is Here!

Spring arrived officially last weekend. We have had such a mild winter, spring just kinda slipped in. Because of the mild temperatures, we have done yard work this past month. Lawn feed was put down several weeks ago. With the tall trees in the back, picking up branches is an ongoing task. Because of the numerous branches that have fallen, we decided to have the trees trimmed and some removed. The last thing we want is a tree to fall! Last week we took a walk around the house and agreed that the lawn we had fed was not greening up. The grass was matted and clearly needed help. So this week we had the lawn thatched. It was amazing the amount of dead grass and such that came up. They also ran the lawnmower (big riding one) over the lawn picking up all the crud they churned up!

Here is the back lawn being thatched. I took the picture from the deck off the breakfast area.

And at the back corner of the property is a group of trees. The pachysandra has been trampled down as this is Honey's favorite spot for her walks. The trees are quite tall and we are concerned that not only would they take out the fence (our neighbor's) but also could hit the house if they fell forward. We expect that the tree people will be here next week.
The swing that you see was there when we bought the house. It's a nice place to sit and enjoy the yard.

Thanks for stopping by!

Back to Blogging!

For some reason...I stopped blogging. I enjoyed it, some people read it....and I stopped. And for the life of me, I'm not sure why! I have one friend (yes, Nancy, you) who has asked more than once for me to start up again. And I've had it in the back of my mind. So today was the day. I had to figure out how to change the title as we are no longer only "at the Lake". But since we are still retired and still taking it "One Day at a Time", that worked.

We are now using the Lake house as our part time house. As we grow older we become more aware of the need to be closer to family and friends. Winter at the lake was too far away from family and, if needed, medical assistance. But we really liked our house and enjoyed the Lake. We had first considered returning to Jersey but after visiting some houses for sale, seeing how the area had become more crowded and the high taxes one pays, Jersey was not an option. So we looked closer to Scranton which would keep us close enough to the Lake to travel back and forth easily. Honey, our yellow lab, does not travel well! We found a lovely house in a small community close to Scranton which made it also close to family, hospitals, places to eat and THE MALL! We are now in our second winter here. We still spend time at the Lake and will return there soon. This is the best of both worlds!

While our weather has been warm this winter, we have still had precipitation. This past week we had several storms come through bringing heavy rain and thunder and lightning.
The snow we were anticipating this weekend now appears to have moved to the south - so our friends in South Jersey may get some snow.

Today our project was to put together a vanity table I had gotten on line from AllModern. It is solid wood and ready to be stained. B is the one who reads the directions (not always cause he does often know just what to do) and I assist. Here I am on the floor tightening up the legs - so I can say I helped.

And here is the finished table - next to the dresser in the bedroom. I'll probably stain this down the road but for now, I'm happy.
The chair is from our breakfast room set - I borrowed it for a bit.
I've been looking forward to sitting while I do make up and dry my hair.

About Me

After working for 40 years in education, I retired and with my husband moved to the "wilds" of PA. This blog is thoughts and pictures of what we are doing.
